Most of the supermarkets do stock a small selection of English and German products (which usually cost more than the local brands), and even daily newspapers from many European countries.

I don't yet know if Lidl will be a local operation that caters primarily for the locals but also uses its connections to stock foreign goods more cheaply, or if they really are going after the tourists and ex-pats.

Lidl on Lanzarote will have to stock for both kinds of customers - the locals and the tourists. Stores need to diversify to survive those days.

I think it is a good idea to have a "foreign" shop there as long as the locals benefit from it in regards to employment etc. As for myself - I am thrilled to be able to buy Asian products in our neighborhood, so why not buy some German products, among local ones, on Lanzarote. Even the locals might like to try some new items.
